Hey,
It's Srijith from 0049 :)
Welcome to The Blick! Each week I round up the stories, events, and opportunities that matter most if you’re living in Germany or planning a move here for work or studies.
🔹 Germany loses UN Security Council seat bid: Germany failed to win a non-permanent Security Council seat on June 3, with Austria and Portugal taking the two Western Europe slots after Berlin fell 23 votes short of the required majority.
🔹 FDP elects Kubicki, reigniting the "firewall" debate: At its May 30–31 federal congress the FDP narrowly elected Wolfgang Kubicki as leader, and his dismissive line on the "Brandmauer" against the AfD ("I don't know it") opened a public dispute over whether the party might one day rely on or work with the far-right AfD.
🔹 Severe storms disrupt the Corpus Christi holiday:The national weather service (DWD) warned wide stretches of the country on June 4 of hurricane-force gusts near 130 km/h and possible tornadoes, snarling travel and outdoor plans on a regional public holiday.
🔹 Promised student-aid increase now in doubt: A coalition budget dispute has cast doubt on the planned rise in the BAföG housing allowance from €380 to €440 per month, which was set to take effect in the 2026/27 winter semester.
🔹 Rheinmetall sells its car-parts division: The defence group agreed on June 4 to sell its struggling automotive unit to investment firm Aequita for about €350 million, with all roughly 6,250 jobs to be retained.
🔹 Football World Cup kicks off: The 2026 World Cup begins June 11 across the US, Canada and Mexico, with Germany opening against Curaçao on June 14 on ARD, ZDF and MagentaTV.
🔹 Berlin-Hamburg rail line fully reopens: Germany's busiest intercity route returns to full service on June 14 after a ten-month overhaul, ending replacement buses, though ICE trips will run five to ten minutes longer until the end of June.
Free youth BahnCard 25 launches from mid-June 2026: Deutsche Bahn will hand all 6- to 18-year-olds resident in Germany a free Jugend BahnCard 25 (normally €7.90) giving a year of 25% rail discounts, available digitally and regardless of nationality, through the end of September. https://www.bahn.de/angebot/bahncard/bahncard25
🔹 New Video: This week's video breaks down German citizenship (Einbürgerung) from start to finish, the requirements, the full application process, and my best tips to get it done faster. After 13 years here, I went through it myself, so I walk through exactly how it works and where people get stuck. If you have lived in Germany a few years, you may already qualify for the fourth strongest passport in the world, and this is the place to start.

That is it for this week. Stay informed, stay prepared.
Until next week,
💙 Peace,
