Hey,
It's Srijith from 0049 :)
Welcome to The Blick! Each week I round up the stories, events, and opportunities that matter most if you’re living in Germany or planning a move here for work or studies.
🔹 A "new beginning" for Merz government: Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed to lead a "new beginning" for his coalition government as it approached roughly a year in office, with the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition facing mounting internal friction and historically low public approval ratings.
🔹 Cuts to parental allowance (Elterngeld): The governing coalition is actively debating reforms to Elterngeld, Germany's parental allowance, with Family Minister Karin Prien tasked with presenting concrete proposals
🔹 Unemployment falls below 3 million: Germany's Federal Employment Agency confirmed that the number of unemployed fell by 58,000 in May to 2.95 million, pushing the total back below the closely watched 3 million mark, though the figure remained 31,000 higher than in May 2025 and the unemployment rate held at 6.3 percent
🔹 Late-May heatwave breaks records: A high-pressure system brought record late-May temperatures to Central Europe, with the German Weather Service rating wildfire danger at Level 4 out of 5 across large parts of Bavaria
🔹 Integration course access reopens: From 1 June 2026, Germany's government partially reverses its controversial freeze on state-funded integration courses, releasing up to 70,000 additional places under strict quarterly quotas
🔹 EU Pay Transparency Directive: Germany must transpose the EU Pay Transparency Directive into national law by 7 June 2026, requiring employers to publish salary ranges in job postings, prohibiting questions about a candidate's current salary, and shifting the burden of proof in pay discrimination cases to the employer.
🔹 Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi): Corpus Christi falls on 4 June and is a public holiday in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland, government offices, immigration authorities, banks, and many businesses will be closed in those regions for the day.
🔹 New Video: The June 2026 update video drops tomorrow on the 0049 channel, and this month has a lot to unpack
🔹 Deck49: Deck49, the German vocabulary app built on spaced repetition and active recall, crossed 1,300 users this week. If you are working on your German, it is worth a look.
