#8 The Blick | Headlines & Highlights | 12-04-2026

Hey,

It's Srijith from 0049 :)

Welcome to The Blick! Each week I round up the stories, events, and opportunities that matter most if you’re living in Germany or planning a move here for work or studies.

The Blick: Week of 5 April - 11 April 2026

What Happened?

🔹 Germany's conscription law: Requires men aged 17–45 to get Bundeswehr permission before leaving for over 3 months. A provision tucked into the Military Service Modernization Act, in force since January 1, 2026. Following intense public pressure, Germany's Defence Minister announced that military-aged men do not need to inform authorities about plans to travel abroad at this time

🔹 EU Entry/Exit System: The EES is now live across all 29 Schengen countries. It replaces passport stamping with digital records and biometric data, fingerprints and facial images, for non-EU nationals on short stays.

🔹 Fuel prices in Germany hit record highs: On Easter Sunday, April 5, the average price of diesel reached a new record high of €2.44 per liter. Sharp price rises are linked to the war in Iran, which has disrupted oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

🔹 925,000 public sector employees received pay rises: Workers covered by collective bargaining agreements across all 16 German federal states received increases of at least 2.8 percent or €100 per month, whichever is higher

🔹 New Video: This week's video addresses one of the most common frustrations for German learners: vocabulary that simply will not stick. The video introduces Deck49, a German flashcard app built around active recall and spaced repetition, two learning methods with strong scientific backing. Just five minutes a day is enough to build real retention. Whether you are preparing to move to Germany or already living here, consistent vocabulary practice is one of the fastest ways to accelerate integration and open up more opportunities at work and in daily life.

That is it for this week. Stay informed, stay prepared.
