#5 The Blick | Headlines & Highlights | 16-03-2026

Hey,

It's Srijith from 0049 :)

Welcome to The Blick! Each week I round up the stories, events, and opportunities that matter most if you’re living in Germany or planning a move here for work or studies.

The Blick - Week of March 8–14, 2026

What Happened?

🔹 Baden-Württemberg election: Greens narrowly won the March 8 state election with 30.2%, finishing just ahead of the CDU at 29.7%. The AfD nearly doubled its 2021 result to 18.8%, while the SPD fell to 5.5%, its worst-ever result in the state.

🔹 Lufthansa pilots strike for 48 hours: The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit called a 48-hour strike at Lufthansa for March 12 and 13, over stalled talks on pension contributions and pay at Lufthansa CityLine. Frankfurt and Munich airports saw the most disruption.

🔹 Border controls: Germany formally extended its temporary internal border controls from March 16 through September 15, 2026, covering all land crossings with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, and Poland.

What's Coming?

🔹 Rhineland-Palatinate state election, March 22: The second state election of the year takes place next Sunday. The election determines all 101 parliamentary seats, and the result could influence national political dynamics beyond the regional level

🔹 New Video: If your applications are not getting responses, the issue may be your cover letter. In Germany, the Anschreiben plays a bigger role in the hiring decision than many applicants realize. This video walks through exactly how to write one that stands out, what German recruiters actually look for, what generic templates get wrong, and how to show real value to a hiring manager.
