German Citizenship Eligibility Check

Answer 6 questions to check your eligibility based on the current Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz (StAG).

Step 1 of 6

How long have you lived legally in Germany?

Count only time on a valid permit. Duldung and student visa (§16b) time does not count. §24 temporary protection (Ukraine) time does count - but you must switch permit before applying.

What residence status do you currently hold?

Some permits do not allow a citizenship application, even after 5+ years of residence.

What is your German language level?

B1 is the standard minimum. Guest workers (entered ≤1974), people with disabilities or advanced age may qualify for a waiver.

Are you currently receiving Bürgergeld or Sozialhilfe?

Receiving SGB II or SGB XII is disqualifying unless an exception applies. Kindergeld and Wohngeld do not count against you.

Do you have any criminal convictions?

Combined fines under 90 daily rates (Tagessätze) or suspended sentences under 3 months are disregarded. Hate crimes and antisemitic offences are an absolute bar.

Does any special situation apply to you?

Some situations open a faster or different path to citizenship.
